Frogs

CRAFTS:
Famished Frog
Find a frog pattern
(I got mine from The Mailbox Magazine April/May 2013 issue).
Have the kids color.
Take a strip of red construction paper
and draw bugs on it.
Tape to the mouth of the front to look like a tongue.

Froggie Cups
I purchased this craft from Michaels Craft Store.

Frog Paper Craft
This was a simple cut and paster paper craft that is easy for preschoolers to make.

Frog Life Cycle Craft

Rhyme:
Five Little Tadpoles
Five little tadpoles swimming near the shore.
The first on said, "Let''s swim some more!"
The second one said, "Let's rest awhile."
The third one said, "Swimming makes me smile!"
The fourth one said, "My legs are growing long!"
The fifth one said, "I'm getting very strong!"
Five little tadpoles will soon be frogs.
They'll jump from the water and sit on logs.

Rainbow Lion

This is a good activity/craft when you want to review colors
and you can easily add it to a Zoo Theme Unit.
I printed out a free coloring lion page from the internet.
There are tons to choose from.

Then cut out strips of different colored construction paper.
Place the colored strips in piles on the table.
Ask the child to pick up the 'blue' color and glue it around the lion's mane.
Repeat for each color you cut out.

Butterfly

CRAFTS
Clothespin Butterfly
This is an oldie but goodie craft that you can't go wrong with.
We took a coffee filer and colored it with marker. Then dripped water on it to spread the marker color.
After it dried we attached a clothespin that the children had colored green and drew faces on.
Then attach a pipe cleaner for the antenna's.

Crayon Butterfly
This is one easy, but you need an adult to help.
I cut out a butterfly template and folded it in half to make a crease.
Open up the butterfly.
The kids put crayon shavings on one half of the butterfly.
(next step is for the adult)
Fold the butterfly in half and gently iron to melt the crayons.
(I put it between dishtowels).
When you open the butterfly, you have a lovely display!
We drew faces and attached pipe cleaners for antenna's.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

SONGS
From Caterpillar to Butterfly
(tune: Clementine)
Caterpillar, caterpillar,
eating leaves and crawling round;
you are big and so you make a
chrysalis far off the ground.

Caterpillar, caterpillar
you are such a big surprise.
You have wings and you're so lovely!
Oh, I can't believe my eyes.

Happy Mother's Day

CRAFT:
Each child made a thumb print around a circle to make a flower and two more on the stem.  We added a yellow pompom in the center of the flower.

The inside of the card said:

This little  flower is special, you see.
Because it was made from a part of me.
My painted thumb made each flower part
To show I love you with all my heart!

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!

SONG:

Celebrate Mother’s Day with this toe-tapping ditty. Write the word Mommy on your board. Then lead students in singing the song six times, removing a letter and replacing it with a clap for each verse.
(sung to the tune of “Bingo”)
I know someone who’s very special.
Mommy is her name-o!
M-O-M-M-Y, M-O-M-M-Y, M-O-M-M-Y,
And Mommy is her name-o!

Letter X

X-ray body:
The front of the paper doll was decorated to look like them. The second paper doll was black and the kids drew their skeleton with chalk. These dolls were layered together and attached with a brass fastener.

X-Ray hand prints:
I used white paint to dip the children's hand in. Then put the hand print on black construction paper.  Take white chalk to outline the hand.

SONGS
Here’s a movie version of “Dem Bones” that sings the song and gives more information about the bones.

Earth Day

CRAFT & ACTIVITY:

Litter Bug
We talked about trash and litter on the ground and that it belongs in the trash.
I crumpled up newspaper and threw it all over our play room.  This kids had to pick it up as fast as they could and put it in the trash.

SONG:

No, No, No More Litter
Tune: Row, Row, Row Your Boat
No, no, no more litter
In our parks or streams.
Sparkily, sparkily, sparkily, sparkily -
Keep them nice and clean!

HAPPY EARTH DAY!

Letter W

This week we focused on the letter W.

WINDOW
We made a window box and put flowers on them in front of a window.

WEATHER
We talked about the different things you wear in all kinds of weather.

WEATHER BOTTLES
You need empty bottles, blue dye, glitter and a hot glue gun.
I showed each child how the dye changes the water.
We added glitter to represent the rain.
I hot glued the lid to the bottle to prevent little ones emptying the contents in the bottle.
You can image what kind of mess that would be!
The kids had fun shaking their bottles and watching the "rain" fall.

Continuing with the weather theme, we made umbrellas.
To make this craft you need coffee filters, markers, pipe cleaners and a spray bottle filled with water.
The kids colored their coffee filter any way they wanted.
The more color the better.
We took the water bottle and sprayed it a little.
We added a pipe cleaner to make the umbrella handle.

WATERMELON

WHALE

BOOKS
Why is the day all Gray? (Winnie the Pooh, Disney book)
The Wind Blew (Pat Hutchins)

SONGS

Thunder, Thunder
tune of Frere Jacques
Thunder, thunder
(hit palms of hand on the floor)
hear me roar, hear me roar,
pitter patter rain drops, pitter patter rain drops,
(take finger tips and tap the floor)
I'm all wet, I'm all wet.
(shake your hands like you are wet)
