Snow Dough

Snow dough is a winter favorite that never fails to delight toddlers. Soft, cool, and perfectly squishy, it invites little hands to scoop, squeeze, and explore at their own pace. The moment it’s placed on the table, curiosity takes over, and play begins.

This sensory activity feels like real snow but is warm enough for indoor fun. Toddlers love molding it into shapes, patting it flat, or simply letting it fall through their fingers. Along the way, they’re building fine motor skills, practicing creativity, and learning through touch and discovery.

Snow dough play is all about simple joy—no instructions, no expectations, just imagination at work. It’s a gentle reminder that the best learning moments often come from hands-on play and a little bit of mess. ❄️

Snow Dough Directions

You’ll need:

2 cups baking soda, 1 cup cornstarch, 1 cup water

Directions:

  1. In a medium saucepan, mix the baking soda and cornstarch until combined.

  2. Slowly add the water, stirring well to remove lumps.

  3. Cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly. It will begin to thicken quickly.

  4. Once it reaches a thick, dough-like consistency, remove from heat.

  5. Let the snow dough cool completely.

  6. Once cooled, knead with your hands until soft and smooth.

Optional:

Add a drop of peppermint or vanilla extract for a gentle scent.

Sprinkle in silver glitter for a sparkly “snow” effect.

Perfect for sensory play—soft, moldable, and just like snow! ❄️

Snow Storm

The kids have been enjoying the science projects we've been doing recently.  This particular project was to show dancing snowflakes.  Ours didn't go as planned and we ended up with a blizzard/snow volcano.  It didn't matter though. Smiles on their faces was my goal and that was achieved.

These are the directions I followed. Maybe you'll have better luck if you try it.

Magic Snow

WHAT A MESS! But the kids had fun and that's all that matters. Right?
We made little villages with Winter Manipulatives.

WARNING: I don't know if it's the brand I bought, but this was SO DIFFICULT to clean up.

I would not recommend it. There are DIY recipes online that I think I will try next winter.

Snow Mountain

We were lucky enough to have a snow day!
It was fun to bring some snow inside, play with it and make a mountain.

In a tall cup or plastic bottle, add 1 tablespoon of dish soap, fill halfway with baking soda and mix in 1/4 cup of warm water.  I used food coloring to make it more fun.  Squirt some vinegar into the bottle and you got your self some snow lava!

Next time I will use a bottle with a more narrow opening, to try to get the lava to shoot up a bit into the air!
