SONGS
WATERMELON CHANT

First you take a seed and you plant it, plant it.
Then, you see a sprout and you water it, water it.
Then, you see a vine and you watch it, watch it.
Then, you see a watermelon and you pick it, pick it.
Then, you slice it up and you eat it, eat it.
If you find a seed, then you plant it, plant it.
And start all over again!

THE WATERMELON SONG
Tune: Frere Jacques
Watermelon, watermelon
Tastes so yummy, tastes so yummy.
Green on the outside
Red on the inside
With black seeds, with black seeds

Jack and the Beanstalk

CRAFT
Paint a paper towel cardboard tube green.
Cut out green leaves and punch a hole in the leaves.
Insert green pipe cleaners thru leaf holes to make it look like a vine.
Wrap the pipe cleaner around the paper towel cardboard tube.
I stapled the top and bottom of the pipe cleaner to the tube to hold it together.

Take two paper plates and glue cotton balls on them.
I used cut outs to go along with the 'Jack and the Beanstalk' story.

INTERACTIVE STORY
Once upon a time there lived a poor widow and her son Jack. One day, Jack’s mother told him to sell their only cow. Jack went to the market and on the way he met a man who wanted to buy his cow. Jack asked, “What will you give me in return for my cow?” The man answered, “I will give you five magic beans!” Jack took the magic beans and gave the man the cow. But when he reached home, Jack’s mother was very angry. She said, “You fool! He took away your cow and gave you some beans!” She threw the beans out of the window. Jack was very sad and went to sleep without dinner.
The next day, when Jack woke up in the morning and looked out of the window, he saw that a huge beanstalk had grown from his magic beans! He climbed up the beanstalk and reached a kingdom in the sky. There lived a giant and his wife. Jack went inside the house and found the giant’s wife in the kitchen. Jack said, “Could you please give me something to eat? I am so hungry!” The kind wife gave him bread and some milk.
While he was eating, the giant came home. The giant was very big and looked very fearsome. Jack was terrified and went and hid inside. The giant cried, “Fee-fifo-fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman. Be he alive, or be he dead, I’ll grind his bones to make my bread!” The wife said, “There is no boy in here!” So, the giant ate his food and then went to his room. He took out his sacks of gold coins, counted them and kept them aside. Then he went to sleep. In the night, Jack crept out of his hiding place, took one sack of gold coins and climbed down the beanstalk. At home, he gave the coins to his mother. His mother was very happy and they lived well for sometime.
Jack climbed the beanstalk and went to the giant’s house again. Once again, Jack asked the giant’s wife for food, but while he was eating the giant returned. Jack leapt up in fright and went and hid under the bed. The giant cried, “Fee-fifo-fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman. Be he alive, or be he dead, I’ll grind his bones to make my bread!” The wife said, “There is no boy in here!” The giant ate his food and went to his room. There, he took out a hen. He shouted, “Lay!” and the hen laid a golden egg. When the giant fell asleep, Jack took the hen and climbed down the beanstalk. Jack’s mother was very happy with him.
After some days, Jack once again climbed the beanstalk and went to the giant’s castle. For the third time, Jack met the giant’s wife and asked for some food. Once again, the giant’s wife gave him bread and milk. But while Jack was eating, the giant came home. “Fee-fi-fo-fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman. Be he alive, or be he dead, I’ll grind his bones to make my bread!” cried the giant. “Don’t be silly! There is no boy in here!” said his wife.
The giant had a magical harp that could play beautiful songs. While the giant slept, Jack took the harp and was about to leave. Suddenly, the magic harp cried, “Help master! A boy is stealing me!” The giant woke up and saw Jack with the harp. Furious, he ran after Jack. But Jack was too fast for him. He ran down the beanstalk and reached home.
The giant followed him down. Jack quickly ran inside his house and fetched an axe. He began to chop the beanstalk. The giant fell and died.
Jack and his mother were now very rich and they lived happily ever after.

3 Little Pigs

3 Little Pigs is one of my favorite stories.
We made a booklet with stick figures.
~
Once upon a time there were three little pigs.
One day, each little pig decided to build his own house.
The eldest little pig built a house made of straw.
But suddenly, a big bad wolf came by and asked if he could come inside.
When the eldest pig refused, the wolf huffed, and puffed, and blew the house down in one blow.
The second little pig built a house made of wood.
Just like with the first, along came the big bad wolf.
He told the little pig to let him in, and when he was refused, the wolf huffed, and he puffed, and blew the house down in two big blows.
The youngest pig built a house made of bricks.
But this time, no matter how hard he tried, the wolf could not blow the house down.
So he decided to try and enter the house through the chimney.
"Owww! It's so hot!" screamed the wolf. In the fireplace below the chimney, a fire was burning vigorously. The wolf writhed in pain, seemingly trapped inside the chimney.
Somehow, he managed to climb back out and he ran away.
Ever since that day, the three little pigs lived in the brick house together as one happy family.

Do Princesses Wear Hiking Boots?

I cut out shapes from a bunch of different projects to make a princess.
(Not the best, but the kids loved it).
Then they glued sequins to make the princess dress look pretty.
They used a 'P' stamp and wrote the letter P to reinforce learning the alphabet.

Wet Dog

BOOK
As you read the story be sure to encourage each child to "pat-a-pat" his legs and 'shaky-shake' his body at the appropriate times during the story.

CRAFT
Take a bit of water with blue food dye.
Use a cotton ball to drip drops of water all over the dog.
You can have older children draw their own dog.

ACTIVITY
Ask: "Does anyone know how a wet dog dries itself?"
After the youngsters respond, have them rested to be puppies.
"Spray" the puppies with a hose and prompt them to shake off the water.

Seeds

The children learned there are many different kinds of seed,
that a seed needs sun and water, and
that a variety of plants and trees grow from a seed.
~
Planting Lima Beans

fill the cup half way with dirt
plant the seed
Add water
watch it grow!
~
Maple Tree
The kids took apart maple tree pods to find the seeds inside.

~
Dandelions

We went for a walk to find the dandelions and blew the seeds into the air.
