Feelings / Monster Bag

This theme of the week is 'Feelings'.
Today we read a story about a big, green monster.
Then we made our own Monster.
I cut out monster feet and glued them onto a manila folder to make them more study.
You will be glueing them to the bottom of the 'monster' paper bag.

Draw a monster face on a paper bag.
Then stuff the bag with newspaper.

Tie string around the top to close it and make it 'monster hair'.

During circle time we made silly faces, angry faces, scared face and happy faces.

The song we sang:
So Many Feelings (tune: Where is Thumbkin)
Where is (happy)
Where is (happy)
Here I am, Here I am.
I am very (happy)
I am very (happy)
Yes I am, yes I am.
Continue with: sad, mad, silly, etc.

Make your own faces and paste on a popsicle stick.  This goes great with the song above.

Ivory Soap Explosion

A few months ago I read about Ivory Soap in the microwave and I have wanted to try it with the kids.

If you do not have Ivory Soap, get some in your next grocery trip.  I promise you will not be disappointed!

Tip #1:  Break the Ivory Soap in 1/4 pieces. Do not put the entire bar in the microwave all at once.

Tip #2: It only works with Ivory Soap.  Tiny air pockets are formed in the soap (that's why Ivory floats).  When heated in the microwave, the moisture in those air pockets changes to a gas and expands.  (I told the kids it is similar to what happens with popcorn).

Tip #3: Be careful at first, because it is fairly hot when it first come out of the microwave. However, it cools down quickly and can be easily handled.  I thought it would be sticky or slimy feeling, but it was actually dry and a bit crumbly.
The kids had a fun time touching it and breaking it apart.

I added a bit of water to make it more "goopy".

Cowboy Boots and Horseshoes

Rhinestone Boots!  The kids loved adding the 'BLING BLING'.

We talked about shoes.  People wear shoes, but so do horses!  You should have seen the eyes of the girls and boys giggle.  They thought horse wearing shoes was the funniest thing!
We also galloped all over the house.

Cowboy Theme

This week we will be focusing on Cowboys.  We sang a cowboy song that will be repeated all week.

Today we talked about Cactuses and how prickly they are to touch.
To represent the prickly parts we glued rice onto the cactus cutouts.  You can add sand too.

Bead Bracelets

Placing beads on a string is good motor coordination for pre-schoolers.

Toddlers get to put beads in containers, also good for motor skills.

My first grader made a very, very long necklace.

Beach Day

Following directions is important: have the children draw a sun and beach ball on their picture.
