Students will be amazed by this simple experiment that allows you to pick ice cubes up with a string. Explain the science behind the trick when the amazement wears off.
Put an ice cube in a glass of water.
Lay a piece of string across the ice cube so that there's a few inches of slack on each side.
Sprinkle salt on top of the ice cube and string
Wait about 60 seconds
Slowly lift the ice cube from the water using both ends of the string.
For the following experiments, we placed salt on our ice cubes and compared how it melted compared to the ice without salt.
