To make snow globes, I used canning jars, sticks from the backyard, hot glue gun, glitter, glycerin (you can find this at a pharmacy. I got mine from CVS) and plastic snowflakes (I had them in my craft closet, but think I purchased them at Michaels Craft Store).

Hot glue the sticks to the lid. Hold it in place until the glue dries.
(You'll have to do this for the kids).
Add glycerin, glitter and snowflakes.
Note: glycerin helps the snowflakes fall slower.
I guessed at the amount of glycerin.
